A lifetime of hybrid and experiential design.
Myka Papetti · they/them · Brooklyn, NY
Since I was a kid, I've been pushing at what experiential design can mean, and how digital and physical experiences relate to each other. It started with writing my first play in high school and acting in shows there, which led to producing independent DIY music shows out of my living room in college and becoming the go-to broadcast director for my school's independent video program. Since then I've called shows for YouTube Partner Experience events at Google, run livestreams at Fidelity that reached up to 100,000 viewers, and helped bring live theater and dance into the digital world.
Alongside that, I've produced fashion shows that turned into parties, a game show where the audience picks every winner, and bespoke destination murder-mystery parties in castles, mansions and all sorts of other fascinating locations.
If you're looking for help with your experiential or themed-entertainment work, or you just need a broadcast director for your show, feel free to reach out.
How I got here
Fire House (2017–2018)
In college I turned my living room in Allston into a music venue called Fire House. There were Berklee kids upstairs who were always playing saxophone and trumpet, so my roommate and I started throwing shows and inviting them down. The first one was in October 2017. By my last semester in the house we were doing one every two or three weeks, and we never got a single noise complaint. When I moved out I handed it off to a younger student, and the school paper wrote about it: "Local bands burn bright at Fire House venue" (Berkeley Beacon, 2018).
Boston Center for the Arts (2018)
I spent a summer as a programs intern at the BCA. I helped with the installation of their exhibit Resistant Currents at the Mills Gallery and wrote the audio for a public art piece on the plaza, which meant figuring out weatherproof speakers and how to set them off with a motion sensor. It's where I was brought up, in a lot of ways, and where I learned where I came from.
Emerson Independent Video (2016–2019)
At Emerson I became the go-to broadcast director for EIV, the student-run video program, calling live multi-camera shows in the Tufte studios. I cut my teeth on a bunch of experimental comedy shows, and in fall 2018 I was technical executive producer of a comedy show called Internews.
An open-air art gallery
I also started Emerson's first open-air art gallery, together with another student.
Downtown Worcester Collective
In Worcester I had a short stint with the Downtown Worcester Collective, putting on networking nights at local bars.
Then, production work
I made interview videos for the Worcester Business Journal, produced podcasts and virtual events at Action! by Design, and ran livestreams of live music at Laudable Productions during COVID. After that came Symphony Space, YouTube's partner events at Google, and Fidelity. These days I'm a theater tech at the Guggenheim and I freelance as a V1 video engineer on LED wall shows around the city.
I've always been someone focused on live entertainment and in-person experience design.
